Empowered Through Voting in first U.S. Election
BSP Participant Spotlight: Maria Melgar (San Mateo, CA)
Meet Maria, a property service worker in San Mateo that has been a longtime participant in BSP programs.
Originally from El Salvador, she became a U.S. citizen in 2018 with the support of BSP’s Citizenship and Civic Engagement programs, and this past year, she took another important step in her civic journey.
In the fall of 2024, Maria joined the BSP team in San Jose at the “Botanas y Boletas” event to learn more about the state propositions on the voting ballot. Before attending the event, Maria felt overwhelmed by the confusing language of the propositions and was considering not voting at all.
Excited to vote for the first time in a U.S. election, she had the chance to ask questions and get clarity she needed to make informed decisions.
After completing this seminar hosted by BSP staff, Maria left the function feeling empowered and inspired to engage with politics. She appreciated BSP’s Activate for Democracy Civic Engagement programs, and was proud to cast her ballot in the 2024 election.
Maria understood the importance of civic engagement and plans to stay informed and involved in the years to come, offering a voice for her community through voting in future elections.
